Looking For The Best All Natural Deodorant?

Apr 29th 2020

If you’re on a quest to find non-toxic alternatives in your skin care products, an all-natural deodorant would be a great place to start.

American women use an average of 12 products a day containing 168 unique chemical ingredients according to a study by the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit environment and health advocacy group.

Many antiperspirants contain aluminum which actually cause the skin cells to swell shut and sometimes clog them all together which is why you don’t sweat. Is this healthy? I don’t think so. Your body’s natural process is to sweat to cool down. But I know…you don’t want to stink either, so what’s a lady to do?

Taking the time to try out different brands to find the right natural deodorant can be frustrating. But I found a really great recipe that uses natural ingredients and actually works! My armpits smell great all day long (yes, I smell my pits often to make sure!), and I don’t have sweat marks or stains on my clothes.

I have been a heavy antiperspirant user over the years and pretty much don’t feel much of anything in my underarms, so with this natural deodorant I do feel a little moisture, but nothing too heavy that I need to worry about.

I also added lavender and tea tree essential oils to the recipe and it smells awesome or you can get one that is unscented. I decided to leave out the baking soda as it sometimes can cause a rash and of course, no aluminium.

Below is a list of ingredients, where they come from and how they help make a great deodorant:

  • Fractioned Coconut Oil is an oil made from regular coconut oil and helps to absorb moisture, cut down on greasiness and helps maintain a longer shelf life.

  • Ozokerite Wax is derived from the veins of sandstone, this is a vegan mineral wax comprised of hydrocarbons. It acts as an emollient to help protect your skin.

  • Coconut Oil, from the coconut, has anti-bacterial properties and can protect against odor-causing bacteria.

  • Unrefined Shea Butter is one of the world's most sustainable natural resources. The shea trees grow naturally in the grasslands of west and central Africa. Shea butter is a fat extracted from the nut of theshea tree. It also has natural anti-bacterial properties to help combat odor-causing bacteria.

  • Zinc Ricinoleate is the zinc salt of ricinoleic acid, a major fatty acid found in castor seed oil obtained from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant. It also traps and absorbs odor molecules.

  • Arrowroot Powder is a starchy substance that's extracted from the root of a tropical plant known as Maranta arundinacea. Arrowroot Powder helps to absorb moisture.

  • Modified Tapioca Starch also called cassava or manioc is a starch derived from the root of the tropical plant "Manihot esculenta." It also helps to absorb moisture.

  • Magnesium Hydroxide is a powder that helps to absorb and fight odor. It’s similar to the laxative Milk of Magnesia, but it won’t have you running to the bathroom!

  • Food Grade Beta Cyclodextrin is a white powder widely used in the food, drug and cosmetic industry that has the ability to absorb and trap odor as well as release the scent of the deodorant. It is produced from starch.

  • Iota Carrageenan is a natural extract from specific red seaweed species that are farmed and processed. It is used as a suspending and emulsifying stabilizer, thickener, binder and gelling agent. It helps to give the deodorant its smooth, creamy texture.

When using an all-natural deodorant, it is common to go through a period of about 1-2 weeks of detoxing. This detox period allows your body to release the toxic aluminum and any other chemicals that were in your other deodorant. Fortunately, I didn’t feel that I went through this. Again, I do feel a little wetness, but nothing too uncomfortable.
